Introduction:
University of Liverpool is one of the Russell Group University in the UK, which represents its excellent research and teaching. University of Liverpool School Of Medicine has a history of almost 200 years and it includes many world-class facilities, such as prominent teaching hospitals, Institute of translational medicine and research laboratories, and also the School of Tropical Medicine.
Medical Curriculum:
University of Liverpool MBChB programme follows a spiral curriculum, which means curriculum content will be gradually added at appropriate stages, and students can keep on practising and revising their knowledge and skills, until they are competent as doctors upon graduation. There are 4 main themes that will run throughout the 5 year duration: Science of Medicine, Research and Scholarship, Chronic and Acutely ill patients, and leadership, management and professionalism. Other themes that will be integrated are psychology and sociology, public health & epidemiology, communication skills and therapeutics.
Year 1 & 2: preclinical studies. Taught using systems approach. Subjects include anatomy, physiology and biochemistry, histology, psychology, sociology, public health in year 1. In year 2, you will learn more about pathology (pathophysiology), basic clinical medicine and clinical surgery and therapeutics, and getting involved in research projects
Mode of delivery of teaching: lectures, practical sessions, clinical skills session, communication skills training (end of year 1), case-based learning (CBL). Begin placements in Year 2
Year 3 & 4: Clinical studies. You will learn how to recognise health problems, skills in history taking, performing physical examinations, diagnosis and management of patients’ conditions. You will learn about clinical medicine, clinical surgery, clinical specialties, GP/primary care, therapeutics
Mode of delivery of teaching: hospital placements 4-5 days a week, in which cases will be logged into an e-logbook.
Year 5: Intensive clinical experience and pre-internship.
Assessment:
Year 1: 2 written papers
Year 2: 3 written papers & OSCE
Year 3: 2 written papers & OSCE
Year 4: 2 written papers, OSCE, LOCAS (Medical Finals)
• Other assignments include professional reflective document, diversity essays, simulation reflective essays, PSM reflective essay, research projects (RS1/2/3)
Living as a student in Liverpool
There are various on-campus and off-campus accommodation. The two newest accommodations are Vine Court and Crown Place. There are many types of rooms offered, from single en-suite rooms to premium rooms, at an average of £140 per week. The campus is not too big and it is of walkable distances from the north to the south campus. Liverpool is a city in England which has the lowest cost of living. (Average expenditure per month is £600). Private houses are easy to find and the weekly rent can go up to as low as £70 per person per week. All facilities such as restaurants, banks, libraries, sports centre, are easily accessible and within walking distances. The campus is just a 10 minute walk from the city centre, the main train station and the main bus station!
