What to include in the personal statement?
1) Why medicine?
2) Relevant work experience/ Voluntary work
3) Extracurricular activities
4) Conclusion (What do you hope to gain from being a medical student?)
1) Why medicine?
- Why do you want to become a doctor?
- What influenced your decision to become a doctor?
- What are the aspects of the life as a doctor that you are looking forward to?
2) Relevant work experience/ Voluntary work
- Where did you do the work experience (Hospital/ GP Surgery/ Clinic/ Orphanage)
- What did you do during the work experience and what did you learn from it?
- What are the qualities that a doctor should demonstrate?
- Give examples of a few clinical situations that you encountered and what did you learn from it?
- What did you learn from observing or talking to the patients?
3) Extracurricular activities
- What are the activities/competitions you participated at school?
- What are the skills you learned from the activities?
- How are those skills relevant to medicine?
- What are your hobbies/ interest? - activities that helps you unwind(to show that you have a good work-life balance)
4) Conclusion (What do you hope to gain from being a medical student?)
